Description: The Narcotics Laboratory Intern will assist in the examination and analysis of material objects related to cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Responsibilities include conducting chemical and forensic analysis of seized narcotics, psychotropic substances, and related evidence to support law enforcement investigations. The intern will help prepare samples, perform qualitative and quantitative tests, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. They will also maintain laboratory records, document findings, and contribute to the preparation of reports for legal purposes. This internship provides hands-on experience in narcotics analysis and exposure to the legal and forensic aspects of drug-related investigations.
Eligibility: The internship is offered to students pursuing a degree, postgraduate study, or research in Chemistry (any branch), Biochemistry, or Forensic Sciences as per GO (P) No. 1699/2024/Home dated 21-06-24 of Government of Kerala.
Location of the internship programme: Chemical Examiners Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.
Duration of Internship: The maximum duration of the internship in the specified division shall be 3 months. Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Selection Process: An interview panel appointed by the Chief Chemical Examiner will hold a preliminary interview with the candidate. Applicants selected for interview shall submit reference letter from the head of the educational institution or the student's research guide. Former students may also apply with reference of their former institution’s head or research guide. The department will select a maximum of 10 students at a time for all five divisions of the laboratory for internship. The remaining candidates, if any, will be shortlisted for the next time. A confirmation message of selection will be forwarded to the selected candidate via email. Selected students shall submit police clearance certificate (PCC) and pay the required fees. Once these steps are completed, the date of joining for the internship shall be informed to candidates via their personal email.
Police clearance certificate (PCC): The selected students shall submit a police clearance certificate (PCC) issued by the concerned District Police Chief must be submitted to the Chief Chemical Examiner after selection. The candidates from Kerala can apply for a PCC through the “POL app” run by Kerala police.
Fee payment: After the police verification is cleared, the selected candidates must remit an internship fee of ₹1000 per month (students from institutions within Kerala) and ₹2000 per month (applicable for students from institutions outside Kerala). Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, or candidates with yellow or pink ration card families studying in Kerala institutions, are exempted from the fee.
An internship certificate will be issued by the Chief Chemical Examiner upon the successful completion of the training.

Internship Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the intern will have gained practical experience in examining material objects related to narcotics cases under the NDPS Act, 1985. The intern will develop skills in conducting chemical analysis of narcotic substances, psychotropic materials. They will learn to prepare samples, Operate and interpret data from advanced instruments such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), HPTLC. Understand the importance of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards for laboratory processes, including instrument calibration and validation of methods. The internship will also enhance their ability to document and report findings clearly, apply critical thinking in narcotics analysis, and develop problem-solving skills in the context of forensic investigations.
