Description: The General Chemistry Laboratory Intern will assist in analyzing samples related to cases registered under the Essential Commodities Act, Explosive Substances Act, Indian Penal Code, and other relevant legislation. Key responsibilities include conducting chemical analyses of substances such as explosives, chemicals, and other commodities to support forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The intern will help prepare and process samples, perform qualitative and quantitative tests, and document findings in compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, the intern will maintain laboratory equipment, adhere to safety and quality assurance protocols, and contribute to the preparation of reports and presentations based on analysis results. This internship provides hands-on experience in forensic chemistry and laboratory operations, offering valuable exposure to legal and regulatory frameworks while developing critical skills for a career in forensic science.
Eligibility: The internship is offered to students pursuing a degree, postgraduate study, or research in Chemistry (any branch), Biochemistry, or Forensic Sciences as per GO (P) No. 1699/2024/Home dated 21-06-24 of Government of Kerala.
Location of the internship programme: Chemical Examiners Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.
Duration of Internship: The maximum duration of the internship in the specified division shall be 3 months. Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Selection Process: An interview panel appointed by the Chief Chemical Examiner will hold a preliminary interview with the candidate. Applicants selected for interview shall submit reference letter from the head of the educational institution or the student's research guide. Former students may also apply with reference of their former institution’s head or research guide. The department will select a maximum of 10 students at a time for all five divisions of the laboratory for internship. The remaining candidates, if any, will be shortlisted for the next time. A confirmation message of selection will be forwarded to the selected candidate via email. Selected students shall submit police clearance certificate (PCC) and pay the required fees. Once these steps are completed, the date of joining for the internship shall be informed to candidates via their personal email.
Police clearance certificate (PCC): The selected students shall submit a police clearance certificate (PCC) issued by the concerned District Police Chief must be submitted to the Chief Chemical Examiner after selection. The candidates from Kerala can apply for a PCC through the “POL app” run by Kerala police.
Fee payment: After the police verification is cleared, the selected candidates must remit an internship fee of ₹1000 per month (students from institutions within Kerala) and ₹2000 per month (applicable for students from institutions outside Kerala). Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, or candidates with yellow or pink ration card families studying in Kerala institutions, are exempted from the fee.
An internship certificate will be issued by the Chief Chemical Examiner upon the successful completion of the training.

Internship Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the intern will have gained practical skills and knowledge in forensic chemistry and laboratory analysis. They will be able to conduct chemical analyses of substances related to cases under the Essential Commodities Act, Explosive Substances Act etc. Learn techniques to detect and identify accelerants, explosives, and residues from arson or blast scenes. Develop skills to analyse materials such as acids, alkalis, metals, paints, dyes, and miscellaneous unknown substances involved in criminal cases. The intern will develop proficiency in preparing and processing samples, performing both qualitative and quantitative tests, and documenting and reporting findings accurately. Identify adulterants in consumer products, such as petrol, diesel, kerosene etc. They will also understand the safety protocols for handling hazardous materials and maintain laboratory equipment effectively. Gain hands-on experience with analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography (GC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy. Additionally, the internship will enhance the intern’s ability to apply critical thinking to solve analytical challenges, improve their attention to detail, and strengthen their teamwork and communication skills in a professional forensic environment.- Warehouse Management
