Description: The Toxicology Laboratory Intern will assist in the examination and analysis of autopsy specimens, blood, and urine samples related to human and animal poisoning cases, as well as drunkenness cases. The intern will support the toxicology division in performing various toxicological tests, including identifying toxic substances and poisons in biological samples. Responsibilities include sample preparation, conducting chemical and instrumental analysis, maintaining accurate records of findings, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality assurance protocols. The intern will also assist in preparing reports and documentation based on test results to support ongoing investigations. This internship offers practical exposure to toxicological analysis in forensic settings and provides valuable experience in working with complex biological samples to identify and evaluate toxic substances.
Eligibility: The internship is offered to students pursuing a degree, postgraduate study, or research in Chemistry (any branch), Biochemistry, or Forensic Sciences as per GO (P) No. 1699/2024/Home dated 21-06-24 of Government of Kerala.
Location of the internship programme: Chemical Examiners Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.
Duration of Internship: The maximum duration of the internship in the specified division shall be 3 months. Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Selection Process: An interview panel appointed by the Chief Chemical Examiner will hold a preliminary interview with the candidate. Applicants selected for interview shall submit reference letter from the head of the educational institution or the student's research guide. Former students may also apply with reference of their former institution’s head or research guide. The department will select a maximum of 10 students at a time for all five divisions of the laboratory for internship. The remaining candidates, if any, will be shortlisted for the next time. A confirmation message of selection will be forwarded to the selected candidate via email. Selected students shall submit police clearance certificate (PCC) and pay the required fees. Once these steps are completed, the date of joining for the internship shall be informed to candidates via their personal email.
Police clearance certificate (PCC): The selected students shall submit a police clearance certificate (PCC) issued by the concerned District Police Chief must be submitted to the Chief Chemical Examiner after selection. The candidates from Kerala can apply for a PCC through the “POL app” run by Kerala police.
Fee payment: After the police verification is cleared, the selected candidates must remit an internship fee of ₹1000 per month (students from institutions within Kerala) and ₹2000 per month (applicable for students from institutions outside Kerala). Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, or candidates with yellow or pink ration card families studying in Kerala institutions, are exempted from the fee.
An internship certificate will be issued by the Chief Chemical Examiner upon the successful completion of the training.

Internship Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the intern will have gained practical experience in examining autopsy specimens, blood, and urine samples involved in human and animal poisoning, as well as drunkenness cases. The intern will develop proficiency in conducting toxicological tests to identify poisons and toxins, prepare and process biological samples and non-biological samples for analysis, and utilize various chemical and instrumental methods for testing.• Acquire hands-on experience with advanced analytical instruments used in toxicological analysis, such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), HPTLC etc. Additionally, the intern will learn to maintain accurate records, adhere to laboratory safety protocols, and contribute to the preparation of reports for legal and investigative purposes. The internship will also enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, improve attention to detail, and strengthen communication and teamwork skills within a forensic toxicology setting.• Understand the importance of adhering to laboratory accreditation standards ISO/IEC 17025: 2017and implementing quality control measures in toxicological testing.- Community Development
