Description: The Excise Laboratory Intern will assist in analyzing samples collected under the provisions of the Kerala Abkari Act and the Medicinal and Toilet Preparation Act. Responsibilities include performing chemical and physical analyses of alcohol, narcotics, and related substances to ensure compliance with legal standards. The intern will aid in the preparation, testing, and documentation of samples, ensuring accuracy and adherence to quality protocols. Additional tasks involve maintaining laboratory equipment, following safety guidelines, and contributing to reports on findings. This internship provides hands-on experience in excise-related forensic and analytical procedures, equipping candidates with essential skills for a career in laboratory science and regulatory compliance.
Eligibility: The internship is offered to students pursuing a degree, postgraduate study, or research in Chemistry (any branch), Biochemistry, or Forensic Sciences as per GO (P) No. 1699/2024/Home dated 21-06-24 of Government of Kerala.
Location of the internship programme: Chemical Examiners Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.
Duration of Internship: The maximum duration of the internship in the specified division shall be 3 months. Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Selection Process: An interview panel appointed by the Chief Chemical Examiner will hold a preliminary interview with the candidate. Applicants selected for interview shall submit reference letter from the head of the educational institution or the student's research guide. Former students may also apply with reference of their former institution’s head or research guide. The department will select a maximum of 10 students at a time for all five divisions of the laboratory for internship. The remaining candidates, if any, will be shortlisted for the next time. A confirmation message of selection will be forwarded to the selected candidate via email. Selected students shall submit police clearance certificate (PCC) and pay the required fees. Once these steps are completed, the date of joining for the internship shall be informed to candidates via their personal email.
Police clearance certificate (PCC): The selected students shall submit a police clearance certificate (PCC) issued by the concerned District Police Chief must be submitted to the Chief Chemical Examiner after selection. The candidates from Kerala can apply for a PCC through the “POL app” run by Kerala police.
Fee payment: After the police verification is cleared, the selected candidates must remit an internship fee of ₹1000 per month (students from institutions within Kerala) and ₹2000 per month (applicable for students from institutions outside Kerala). Students can apply for an internship of less than one month, but they should remit a minimum fee for one month.
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, or candidates with yellow or pink ration card families studying in Kerala institutions, are exempted from the fee.
An internship certificate will be issued by the Chief Chemical Examiner upon the successful completion of the training.

Internship Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the intern will have gained comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in excise laboratory operations. They will be proficient in performing quantitative and qualitative analyses of alcoholic beverages samples collected under the Kerala Abkari Act and the Medicinal and Toilet Preparation Act, to determine the ethanol content and detect adulterants to ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Identify toxic adulterants like methanol in liquor. The intern will gain hands-on experience with analytical tools like Gas Chromatography (GC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/LC-MS), HPTLC. Understand laboratory quality assurance protocols, including adherence to ISO/IEC 17025 :2017 standards and internal calibration processes. They will also enhance their ability to document and report findings accurately, compile test results in compliance with legal requirements, and apply critical thinking to identify anomalies in sample analysis. Furthermore, the internship will strengthen the intern’s professional skills, including attention to detail, time management, and teamwork, while providing valuable exposure to regulatory compliance and analytical sciences.- Warehouse Management
